The Wellness Gym Otago delivers high quality, research-led exercise programmes for survivors of all cancer types. Tailoring exercises to the individual, we take into account cancer type, treatment, medications, abilities and personal motivation. The Wellness Gym is a strong community of cancer survivors who support each other, no matter what life brings.
The programme aims to significantly improve the physical health and quality of life for cancer survivors and patients through prescribed, tailored and monitored exercise programmes in a safe and supervised environment.
Originally designed with a focus on breast cancer, over 500 female and male clients suffering from a range of cancers went through the programme, when it was based at the University of Otago.
A large number of studies have been carried out over the past 12 years, including numerous post graduate projects. Results from the research has shown exercise that combines weight training with aerobic exercises (walking, cycling) improves muscle strength and endurance, heart and lung (cardiorespiratory) fitness, functional fitness, and quality of life. Exercise may decrease cardiovascular risk factors.
This kind of exercise may also support you in your return to work. Our findings have also been observed in larger International studies.
After 12 years of running the programme, the gym’s initial phase has come to an end. And we are so excited for this next, big step. Joining forces with our partner programme run in Queenstown and Wanaka, we are determined to keep the gym in Dunedin, too.
We have the knowledge, the experience, the support from medical professionals and a ton of passion from current and past clients. What we need now is funding to keep going, and to keep growing.
