The Wellness Gym delivers evidence-based exercise programmes designed specifically for cancer survivors in Dunedin. Through individually tailored exercises, we support people with all cancer types. We take into account your treatment, medications, abilities, and personal goals.
More than a gym, we're a community of cancer survivors who understand what you're going through and support each other through every challenge.
Our programme builds physical strength and improves quality of life through prescribed, tailored, and monitored exercise in a safe, supervised environment.
Born from research at the University of Otago, the programme has supported well over 650 people through their cancer journeys. What began with a focus on breast cancer has grown to welcome survivors of all cancer types—both women and men.
Almost two decades of of dedicated research, including numerous postgraduate studies, shows that combining resistance training with aerobic exercise (like walking or cycling) delivers real results: improved muscle strength and endurance, better cardiovascular fitness, enhanced functional ability, and greater quality of life.
This research-led approach may also reduce cardiovascular risk factors and support your return to work—findings that align with major international studies.
Closing our first chapter in 2021, after twelve years of being based at the University of Otago, we reached an exciting turning point. We're now a registered charity offering a community-based service with a fully equipped gym in St Kilda, Dunedin.
We have the research foundation, the clinical expertise, the backing of medical professionals, and the passionate support of our community. What we need now is sustainable funding to continue serving cancer survivors across Otago.
The Wellness Gym Otago delivers high quality, research-led exercise programmes for survivors of all cancer types.
