An exercise programme, initially for breast cancer survivors, was established at the University of Otago by Associate Professor Lynnette Jones in September 2009, after supporting a close friend (Chrissie Mahoney) who was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2005. Chrissie passed away in December 2009.
The success of the programme and the development of a close collaboration with the Oncology Department, Dunedin Hospital has been a key feature.
This programme linked scientific theory with practice and teaching to provide a safe and effective exercise opportunity to cancer survivors. With the programme no longer available at the University, we are seeking funds to establish the programme in a community-based setting.
A large number of studies have been carried out over the past 12 years, including numerous post graduate projects. Results from the research has shown exercise that combines weight training with aerobic exercises (walking, cycling) improves muscle strength and endurance, heart and lung (cardiorespiratory) fitness, functional fitness, and quality of life. Exercise may decrease cardiovascular risk factors.
This kind of exercise may also support you in your return to work. Our findings have also been observed in larger International studies.
After 12 years of running the programme at the University of Otago, we have now established the Wellness Gym as a community service in Dunedin.
We have the knowledge, the experience, the support from medical professionals and a ton of passion from current and past clients. What we need now is funding to keep going, and to keep growing.
