Due to the rigorous processes in place, The Wellness Gym can accept clients while they are in active treatment. In general, Oncologists are hesitant to suggest exercise to active treatment clients, for risk of infection and other unintended injuries. But with the level of expertise and close supervision The Wellness Gym offers, the Oncology Department at Dunedin Hospital has been referring clients regularly, to start the programme during their active treatment phase.
If you are interested in joining the programme, talk to your oncologist or nurse practitioner.
An initial conversation will answer all of your questions, and ensure we know everything there is to know about your health and your treatment.
You will go through a free exercise prescription programme with a mix of one-on-one and small group sessions. During this time, an experienced and knowledgeable trainer will always be available to accommodate your physical changes during and after treatments.
After the initial programme, which can take up to 6 months, you are welcome to join the post treatment group for guided group circuit sessions.
The Dunedin-based post treatment group is currently open to clients who have completed their initial active treatment programme with us. As part of the post treatment group, you can attend up to 2 supervised group classes per week.
Experienced trainers with specialist knowledge in exercise oncology run these circuit sessions. They will supervise you to make sure you keep exercising the right way, and that you keep achieving your goals.
Participants pay a contribution of $5.50 per session.
No client is turned away: if you are unable to afford the contribution, let us know. We have scholarships available.
The programme aims to significantly improve the physical health and quality of life for cancer survivors and patients through prescribed, tailored and monitored exercise programmes in a safe and supervised environment. Originally designed with a focus on breast cancer, over 500 female and male clients suffering from a range of cancers went through the programme, when it was based at the University of Otago.
The programme’s name may have changed, but here’s what will stay the same:
We deliver high quality, research-led exercise programmes for survivors of all cancer types.
Our clients are supported and supervised by highly qualified trainers with specialist knowledge in exercise oncology, led by Associate Professor Lynnette Jones.
Exercises are tailored to the individual: we take into account cancer type, treatment, medications, abilities and personal motivation.
The Wellness Gym is a strong community of cancer survivors who support each other, no matter what life brings.
